Membership culling policy

Recommended Posts

Since December 2003 a culling policy has been applied in order to keep the Forum's database tidy.

This was introduced because membership of this forum has always been intended to be an act of participation, of sharing knowledge and experiences, of exploring a common interest that has brought us together as a community, but some registrations of long standing have never made a single post. It will be assumed that these registrations were made out of curiosity or that interests have moved on. There will also be a few registrations where passwords have been forgotten and another registration has been made, despite THIS.

1. Members who have not VISITED (i.e. logged on) for more than twelve months will be assumed to have moved on and will be removed automatically (on a monthly basis).

2. NEW members who have never logged in to view the forum within three months of registration will be removed, as it will be assumed they either have insufficient interest, never received the confirmation email or lost their registration details.

3. Members who display an invalid location in their profile, or an invalid email address, after being sent a Private Message requesting a correction, will be removed after their next login, if the request has not been actioned immediately.

4. New registrations made with an invalid location, anonymous/invalid/uncontactable email address or vulgar display name will be deleted immediately and without notification.

Apologies to the few who are inconvenienced by this policy; you are most welcome to re-register and participate.

I think that removing anyone who does not participate after a certain period is very sensible.

You may note that the membership count has reduced considerably.

This is because, at long last, I have worked out how to cull "obsolete" members from the database in the manner originally intended.

First off, until now, the database has been culled by removing members who have not posted for 12 months. That was unkind to those who prefer to look in rather than post.

Now the database is being culled on the basis of logins, so that means if a member has logged in to look at the forum in the last (rolling) 12 months, he or she is safe, however, if a member has NOT logged in during the last year, it will be assumed that the member is no longer interested in the forum.

So now we will have a situation where members, regardless of join date, will retain membership IF they have LOGGED IN within the last (rolling) 12 months.

The cull is run once per month and is usually triggered on or just after the 2nd of every month, so, for example, if the cull is run on 2nd June 2009 and members have logged in at least once AFTER 1st June 2008, they will not be removed from the database.

Currently, as I type, members who have logged in at least once since 1st May 2008 retain their membership.

I have tried to join BBS but never managed to. Received an email saying my application had to be approved by management but that is as far as it went - management never responded further. Apart from anything else, this way of treating potential subscribers is just so damned RUDE.

Anybody care to comment? Probably not is my guess.
