Indoor scope range finding.

Recommended Posts

Hi all , Happy Easter ,

I am lucky enough to have a workshop that has a 35 yard zeroing part to it.

If I mark up my side wheel distances 8-35 indoors will this be ok when shooting outside? Or should it be all done outside?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it will make any difference , depending on the lighting . after all we have to range find summer and winter . maybe if it was super cold or super hot , it might . but as long as the doors were left open , or windows enough to recreate the ambient temp . nope i reckon it will be OK ??? I have the same. It makes no difference as long as the indoor light is quite bright ( not lighted by those dim saver bulbs)

And yet, in the barns at Pete's Airgun Farm, under non natural light, almost every scope I've used ranges a good few yards differently to what they do in natural light.

Setting zero at a known distance isn't a problem. 35 yards is still 35 yards light or dark. I'd personally avoid marking a scope wheel for ranges in non natural light.

Although, having said that, it's not gonna matter much if you're a few yards out up to 35.

I wouldn't do it. I tried doing my ranges in a warehouse once and they were nothing like when I got outside

Wont matter if a few yards out to 40, that's only top of kill aim point and anyone should be able to guess visually within that.

Problem is above 40 yards margin for visual error a lot higher.

Never ever known any indoor place tie up with any light out doors, can be an easy 5 yrds out at 50.

Should be able to mark up satisfyingly every 5 yards from 10 to 65 in 3/4hr, 13 ranges. If pedantic every yard 10 to 20 about another 20 mins.

Is that a yes or no then???

If it's darker than outside which is probably a yes then your eye will 'see' the ranges different than in daylight. Worth it to get rough ranges you can then verify in daylight but I'll be very surprised if they're the same.

There's every point mate , you obviously have time to waste , where as I don't ! I'd rather do it once and do it right...

Thanks for the other constructive comments.

Up to 35yds will be fine. Use something like a proper paper target so you can range on find detail... or newsprint.

Don't bother with 8 or 9 yards. BFTA doesn't go below 10.

Tis a hard life in FT ??? HOLLY

It's as hard as you want to make it. In the case of your good self you make it very difficult for yourself, but then it is pure entertainment when wheels fall off wagons and barrels go flying down range so we can't complain.... :rofl2:

When folk talk of pushing the limit etc , it is usually assumed to be the upper limit

Not so much chickened out as gracefully gave up a place for another shooter...

Anyways, I have a Big Bang shoot first thing Sunday, then I'm probably going up to Springfield to pellet test my uber-secret findings under the watchful eye of young Andy.

Depending on how well the tests go, well we shall see...

Very true, however the testing bit hasn't happened yet so we'll save the did or didn't work bit until after. Even then I might say it didn't work just to put young Holls off the scent, we can't have him gaining an advantage when burgers (and or cake) are at stake can we...
