Since December 2003 a culling policy has been applied in order to keep the Forum's database tidy.
This was introduced because membership of this BBS has always been intended to be an act of participation, of sharing knowledge and experiences, of exploring a common interest that has brought us together as a community, but some registrations of long standing have never made a single post. It will be assumed that these registrations were made out of curiosity or that interests have moved on. There will also be a few registrations where passwords have been forgotten and another registration has been made, despite
THIS.
1. Members who have not VISITED (i.e. logged on) for more than twelve months will be assumed to have moved on and will be removed automatically (on a monthly basis).
2. NEW members who have never logged in to view the forum within three months of registration will be removed, as it will be assumed they either have insufficient interest, never received the confirmation email or lost their registration details.
3. Members who display an invalid location in their profile, or an invalid email address, after being sent a Private Message requesting a correction, will be removed after their next login, if the request has not been actioned immediately.
4. New registrations made with an invalid location, anonymous/invalid/uncontactable email address or vulgar display name will be deleted immediately and without notification.Apologies to the few who are inconvenienced by this policy; you are most welcome to re-register and participate.

First of all, a warm welcome to AirGunForum.
Unfortunately, we have recently encountered certain individuals signing up with false details and anonymous email accounts, and causing problems with malicious postings.
In common with the other leading UK boards, we have decided to take positive action to stop these people spoiling the genuine members' enjoyment of AirGunForum.
We are no longer permitting automatic registrations. All new membership applications will be examined by the administrators before full access to the forum is granted.
Registrations from members using free anonymous email services such as Hotmail or Yahoo will generally no longer be accepted. To register you will require a valid normal email address such as that supplied by your ISP. If, however, you have only an anonymous email address, all is not lost; send an email to
Admin. who
will assist you.
These actions have not been taken lightly. Enforcement will, unfortunately, involve a lot more work on behalf of the volunteer board staff, but we are convinced it is the only way forward.
Presently, there are no plans to apply the anonymous email service restriction to existing members, but that is subject to constant review.
Furthermore, we now ask that a location be entered. This is only to ensure as far as possible that comment and exchange of information is as appropriate as possible to the varied laws applicable across the world.
Anyone attempting to register with an anonymous email address or invalid location will not be accepted and their registration application will be deleted.I hope you all support our determination to keep AirGunForum a friendly, troll-free and interesting place to visit.===============================================

Some tips to avoid problems for both members and admin.Specifics.
1.Don't register with a duff email address or a full mailbox and don’t ignore the validation email that is sent
IMMEDIATELY after registration. Another validation is sent the next day to those who have not completed, If, after five days in the registration queue, you have notcompleted the email validation, you will be removed automatically..
It may be that folks are unaware that their email addresses have problems (test first by sending yourself an email) or are just trying it on. Either way, an invalid email address or no validation = no contact = REGISTRATION FAILURE. (Do take care to enter the correct suffix .COM, .CO.UK, .NET etc.; some carelessly enter the wrong one e.g. BTINTERNET
.CO.UK is invalid.)
Some registrants' mailboxes do not accept AirGunForum emails. Please note that Admin does NOT have the time or inclination to complete anti-spam questionnaires, which can be both long and intrusive. Also, some ISPs including
WP.PL, BK.RU, LIST.RU, MAIL.RU, PRODIGY.NET.MX and
SANCHARNET.IN censor/reject mail from AirGunForum.
2.Anonymous email registrations are not normally accepted during registration. The reason for this together with a list of anonymous email providers can be seen here:
http://www.airgunforum.net/agf/index.php?showtopic=2693. Such registrations are refused or deleted. All new registrations are checked and if considered to be anonymous, the details are added to the
anonymous email list and the registration is deleted.
3.You are requested to enter your location
*INCLUDING COUNTRY* to avoid confusion when asking or answering country-specific questions or partaking in sales and wanted. Please don't omit your country and enter only your town/city, thereby ASSUMING there is only ONE London, Washington or Berlin in the world. Those who don't know what their COUNTRY is are cdeleted to give them another chance to get it right and participate on the forum (and sadly, there are quite a few

). It pays to read what is written, rather than assume you know what is there!
4.At the end of the registration process, there's an advisory stating that posting isn't possible until Admin has reviewed registrations, yet there are frequent "I can't post" emails received by admin. Can't people read? Do they disbelieve everything they see? Do they always press the red button that says "Do not press"?

Admin can't be online 24/7, so please "gizza chance", folks.
5.Please be aware that if you don't keep your email address up to date, The system advises me of any undeliverable messages sent via the Forum. I can only warn the user by PM and if there are too many "undeliverable" warnings, my only solution is to delete the member. I regret doing this, but at least it stops the flood of warning messages. (Note, subsequent offensive emails from the member or their "other half" don't cut any ice!

)
6.FAC Forum. For security reasons, I only ever respond to a member's registered email address, so again, please keep it up to date. FAC Forum joining details are here:
http://www.airgunforum.net/agf/index.php?act=ST&f=26&t=11115.
7.If you register with different LOGIN and DISPLAY names, do ensure when logging on, that you use your
LOGIN name to do so. If, after registration, you decide you want your login name to be the same as your display name, email
Admin with an understandable message.
8.Difficulties. I DO respond promptly to queries, but please ensure there's something in your message that I can respond to. Messages often contain no detail at all of the difficulty being experienced. A username would also be nice - just to give me a clue!

Hi folks.
If you are wondering why your replies mysteriously quote the post you were viewing, it's because you are using the

button instead of the

button.
The

button appears beneath every post and the

button now appears to its left as well as below the last post and above the first post of a thread.
Unnecessary quotes add clutter to threads and this has been identified by many users of InVision BBS software, who have requested that the

button be removed in a future software release. Unfortunately, it wasn't included in the recent upgrade so our intrepid Tech. Support, (Lincs_Sniper), amended the code to ensure the

button now appears beneath every post.
A little care and thought on the part of members should remove the spurious addition of unwanted quotes.

Would members please ensure they use the
FAC forum for all technical information and detail that could take an airgun over the UK's legal (unlicensed) limit.
The FAC forum is reserved for those who have a firearms certificate (in the UK) or who are permitted muzzle energies in excess of 12fpe (rifles) and 6fpe (pistols) in their own countries. Access requires the completion of a questionnaire available from
admin@airgunforum.net . Please use your REGISTERED email address to make the request
(NOT BY PM) and remember to include your username.

LOGIN and DISPLAY namesThe most common access problem on the forum is that the member is trying to use their DISPLAY name instead of their LOGIN name when attempting a login.
An additional security feature requires users to login each time access is attempted from a different computer.
Forgotten PASSWORDSIt's not uncommon for members to lose passwords and even login, thus preventing access to the board.
The forum's password recovery procedure works fine, but ONLY if the email address registered on the forum is still valid (a good reason to check your profile from time to time). If the email addy is no longer valid, Admin receive a warning message but can do nothing about it, because there is no way of contacting that member.
In order to retain your post count, username, continuity and joining date, all the member has to do is drop an email to admin@airgunforum.net explaining the problem and admin will help you to sort it out. There are many members on here who can attest to the success of doing just that.
Sadly, it's too much hassle for some, who either give up or register YET again, as a newbie.

Dear members,
When offering advice on the forum, could we please exercise a little thought before posting.
There have been instances of late whereby albeit in jest, the advice offered in certain posts could have lethal repercussions if followed. Please do not assume of others what you yourself know, and bear in mind that anyone, registered or not, has the ability to view what you post.
Thank you.
Regards,
Admin.

Occasionally, I receive emails from members asking for help and I ALWAYS respond.
Unfortunately, some of you use email addresses that won't accept incoming mail and I can't get my reply to forward to you.
Also, despite a warning being shown in bold and RED during registration, some still persist in trying to sign up with anonymous email addresses. They used to receive a polite email explaining why anon. email addresses aren't acceptable. Most don't reply, probably due to the "oops!" factor, so now I just delete 'em.
Finally, there are always a few who enter an invalid email address when registering, so don't receive the account confirmation details and that's why they can never log on. If a validation email isn't received within 24 hours of registration, then a typo, either deliberate or accidental, will almost certainly be the cause.
So come on chaps, you want the information or access but you aren't doing anything to help yourselves. Please sort yourself out or email me with details so I can sort it out for you, but please don't think your requests are falling on deaf ears! I'm doing all I can; the rest is up to you.
If you DON'T sort it out and rejected messages continue, my only course of action to stop the nuisance is to delete your registration.

AirGunForum.net is a members' only bulletin board provided as a free-of-charge service to the shooting community. As such, members accept that no promises or guarantees regarding the availability of the service are made or implied.
The forum staff give their time and expertise to the forum without reward or remuneration. Members are required to remember this at all times when dealing with staff.

The staff endeavour to monitor all posts but, with due regard to their voluntary status, 100% is not always achievable. Members are asked to be vigilant and report posts they consider to infringe the board's rules. Staff will take action, within a reasonable timespan, to edit or delete posts they consider to fall outside the boundaries acceptable to the board.
Members are welcome to question a staff member's decision, by email or private message to the staff member concerned, but discussion will not be entered into on the open forum.
In the event of their being no satisfactory resolution to a dispute between a member and a staff member, a member may appeal directly to the forum owner. Although the owner will make every possible effort to be fair to all concerned, in any dispute his decision is final.

You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by AirGunForum.net or you have written permission from the copyright owner to do so. Furthermore, it is a condition of membership that a valid email address and an identifiable location (e.g. country of residence) are entered into a member's profile. Members should ensure that these details are kept up to date.
Should problems arise with recorded details or conduct, members may be warned by forum staff, their posting rights may be suspended for a period, or they may be expelled completely from the forum and their membership records deleted.
Displaying PicturesPictures of shot quarry are discouraged and unnecessary, but if posted, they may only be displayed in the hunting forum. Because of this, members must NOT include pictures of shot quarry in their signature. If this requirement is disregarded, pictures will be removed and the member will be censured.
For Sale/Swap and WantedIn addition to the above, these additional guidelines apply to the "For Sale or Swap" and "Wanted" forums.
The forum no longer accepts adverts for Realistic Imitation Firearms (RIFs), in accordance with the VCR act. Members are requested to read the "sticky" post at the head of the For Sale/Wanted forum entitled Realistic Imitation Firearms (RIFs)
BEFORE making any post.
The forum's focus is airgunning, so members are requested to ensure their posts have some relevance to airgunning.
AirGunForum's "For Sale" and "Wanted" sections are neither an auction site nor a free noticeboard for traders. A price should normally accompany items for sale. If an auction is preferred, please advertise on our sister site,
http://www.airgunauction.net The selling prices for articles in the For Sale section are set by the SELLERS. Members who spoil threads by adding critical, derisory or unhelpful comment may lose access to the "Sales" and "Wanted" sections.
Links to non-airgun auction sites (e.g. Ebay) are unwelcome and will be removed.
Topic starters are asked to limit "BUMP" posts, which get your post back to the top, to one per day (The first bump being the day after the original post was started). Extra BUMPs by non-topic starters are unwelcome.
Keep posts updated and do not start multiple threads for the same item.
Tolerance will be applied by forum staff, as always, but if activity is considered inappropriate, action will be taken to either remove offending material, the offender or both.

Membership of this BBS has always been intended to be an act of participation, of sharing knowledge and experiences, of exploring a common interest that has brought us together as a community.
The BBS is now over two years old an I've noticed quite a lot of early registrations that have never made even a single post.
I can only assume that these were registrations made out of curiosity or that interests have moved on. There are quite probably a number of registrations where passwords were forgotten and so another registration was made.
As we're not gripped by the number of registrations on the board, I propose culling the dead wood. My apologies in advance to anyone who's been a long-term watcher and non-contributor who gets chopped, but the solution is to simply re-register and participate.
I'll be doing the cull fairly soon, by the way, and hope I get it right first time..... ??? ??? ???
Addendum June 2005
The cull policy has now been in use for 18 months and appears to be working well. Membership figures are around the 2k mark and registrations are approaching 7k.
Addendum August 2009
The cull policy was changed a few months ago, and is working as intended. The cull now removes people who have not [b]logged on[b] to the forum for 12 months or more. The cull is now no longer based on whether a member has posted or not. That policy removed members who looked in, but did not contribute (post).

Tips for sales/swaps/wanted
1. Always note the number of posts a member has made. The more posts, the greater the chance of the person being more widely known. Members of AirGunForum who break the forum's rules, including acts of dishonesty, don't last long.
2. Do a search on the member's name in the sales and wanted forums to see how many deals have been done. The more activity in the sales/wanted forums, the safer your deal will be.
3. Don't be afraid to ask on the open forum, once an agreement has been reached, for members to give their experience with the other party.
4. If someone asks about your sales record on the open forum, don't feel insulted, it's a sensible thing to do and if you're honest, it will re-emphasise that.
5. ALWAYS get the other party's name and address. You can always check online phone directory services to see who the phone is registered to at that address.
6. Also, compare the name and address given for delivery of goods or payment with the location that the member shows in their personal profile.
7. Try to complete your deal using posts on the open forum, then, in the event of a problem requiring intercession by the board's staff, all details are viewable. Dealing by email or PM (Private Message) results in a lot of "I said", "He said" comment that is not readily provable. It is one of the reasons that AirGunForum limits members' edit time to 30 minutes, so "history" cannot be changed or covered up by deliberate changes.
8. Sometimes, it may be better for a parcel delivery to be sent to a neighbour's/friend's/relative's address where they are at home all day. If that is requested, DO ensure you get your trading partner's address and the relationship he has with the person at the alternative address.
9. Beware of using PayPal, they will NOT reimburse for guns!
10. Always pack items adequately. Consider splitting a rifle's stock and action to make a parcel look less "gun-like", but check first with your trading partner if that would be acceptable.
11. Retain serial numbers where applicable before posting.
12. First class post carries with it compensation up to 34, provided you can prove you sent the item and the recipient is adamant about non-receipt. Always ensure there is adequate insurance on your post and be certain to ask at the Post Office for a proof of posting. They will groan as it takes a short time to complete and it's free, but it is proof that you sent a parcel to your trading partner. (It doesn't prove what is in it, though.)
13. DO remember that the forum simply brings together like-minded people. Membership of the forum and number of posts are not a measure of a person's integrity. The forum cannot vouchsafe the integrity of any member and places that responsibility firmly on the shoulders of trading partners.
14. Forum members are actively encouraged to report suspected dishonest practise to Administration, who will endeavour to arbitrate (subject to time limitations) and take action judged appropriate to the circumstances. Admin prefer such reports to be emailed at admin@airgunforum.net rather than via the board's PM (Private Message) system.
15. AirGunForum members should consider a final post in their thread with comments like: "Sold to <membername>" or "Sorted with <membername>" so admin can amend the post title and all other members can see with whom a satisfactory deal was closed. Members might also make good use of the "Good Deals" thread, pinned at the top of the "For Sale" forum.
16. If you say you'll buy something from another member and your offer is accepted, you have both entered into a VERBAL CONTRACT and while it is relatively difficult to make you complete that contract, if a complaint is made about your actions then you may find yourself suspended pending an explanation to admin and the other party. If you change your mind, have the fundamental decency to tell the other party and offer an explanation. That may very well preserve your reputation and keep your friends on all of the boards - remember, bad news spreads fast!
Finally a comment often made by victims
If you are ripped off, don't expect help from the police. Since you had a verbal contract, they will say it is a civil matter, goodbye.

ADVANCE WARNING OF DOWNTIME
AirGunForum is being moved from its present hosting server to a newer, faster server commencing at approximately 5pm. (17:00GMT) on Saturday 19th August.
It will take some time for AirGunForum’s new server’s IP address to “percolate” through the network, so some confusion may well result from the changeover.
When the move has been completed, not everyone will be able to access the forum IN ITS NEW LOCATION immediately. This is because when you attempt to connect to www.airgunforum.net your ISP looks up details of the host and its server’s name in a table. It then directs you to the server’s IP address associated with that DNS (Domain Name Server). As soon as the site has been moved to its new server the registrar IP's will be changed to that of the new server. Just how soon you will see the newly located AirGunForum will depend on how frequently your ISP (Internet Service Provider) updates its tables. Some will pick it up in an hour, some in four hours, and some may take 24 hours.
This means that some members could be posting on the old server after the transfer has been made, while others may quickly be on the new server. It all depends on who you use for your ISP and how often they update their lookup tables.
If the host changes these arrangements I will amend this notice accordingly.
Apologies in advance for any problems this may cause.

Apologies to all users. We've been hacked by a spammer who has generated loads of rubbish emails.
We're just waiting for our techie to scrape together enough time to upgrade the board's software, which will prevent this happening.
The board's administrators would NEVER willingly or knowingly permit users to be spammed.
Once again, sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.

We have now moved on to the new quad 2.4Ghz Xeon server, so the reliability issues we have suffered of late should be over with (fingers crossed, eh?)
In the move, I think we have lost maybe a day or so's posts. Short of keeping the board offline over the weekend and digging them out manually there is not much more I can do on this. Please accept my apologies, I hope there was nothing lost that cannot be reposted if necessary.
Please enjoy the board!
All the best,
